Today I’ve been thinking about how I would explain the idea of being in Christ to someone who had no idea what that meant. What does it mean to be “in Christ”? How do we do that? What does it look like?
Paul’s letters to different churches gives us an idea of what being in Christ means for us. How do you get to the place of being in Christ? You probably already are. If you’re a Christian then you are in Christ, you are part of the Church, His body. The important thing is now recognizing what that means. If I went into outer space, or in the ocean, and tried to live as if I was still in my home I’d run into all kinds of issues. We need to understand what living in Christ means so we can live in reality. Being in Christ, but not living like we’re in Christ will cause problems in your life.
One of my favorite verses about being in Christ is in 2 Corinthians 1:21 Paul says “He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God.” I love that God is the one who establishes us in Christ. It’s not something we need to do ourselves, and it’s not an immediate thing. God is continually establishing His people, in Him. We are like a house being built in Christ, everything is there, but it’s being built day by day. Colossians 2:7 says that we are being rooted and built up in Him. God is the master craftsman and architect, building and establishing our lives every day.
The reality is that you are in Christ. So now you need to make the choice to live as though you’re positioned in Christ. God will not force you to live in the reality because you still have free will as a Christian. But know that there are advantages you may be unaware of and missing out on. As a child of God you have an inheritance. You have privileges that God has qualified you to partake in that aren’t available to everyone. When you were saved you were transferred from the kingdom are darkness into the kingdom of Jesus (Colossians 1:12-13). Now you have the choice to either keep living as if you’re stuck in darkness, or live in God’s Kingdom. Everything in His Kingdom is done and received by faith. All of these promises are received and lived out by your faith.
