Would you believe me if I told you that people don’t want there to be solutions to the worlds biggest problems? I have noticed over the years that many people believe that problems aren’t solve-able, disorders are incurable, and people are unchangeable. Why? Because you having a solution equals you having responsibility. If there’s a fire and you have water then you also have the obligation to put out the fire. People are denying they have the solution needed to avoid personal responsibility. I can’t do anything so someone else can worry about that. It’s much easier to say “I wish I could help” than actually helping.
I believe this is also a big reason that people deny the power of the Holy Spirit. Denying that God gives His children power and authority places responsibility on God rather than us. It would be cruel to carry the solution to someone’s problem and not give it to them. Christians say “I’ll pray for you” but they quickly put all of the responsibility and risk on God. Jesus told His disciples “YOU go heal the sick, YOU go cast out demons, YOU go preach the Gospel, YOU go baptize people, YOU go make disciples. The great commission that Jesus gave us is not to pray for God to do things for us, it is to co-labor with Him, to step out in bold faith relying on the power of the Holy Spirit.
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us” Ephesians 3:20 NIV
The problem with that is it places a huge responsibility upon you and me as Christians. We don’t want to pray for sick people because what if it doesn’t work? Then we look bad. It’s much easier to say God will do all the work and we have no part in it.
Why would God want us to be a part of His doings? Why do we need to be involved? God has given us His power because His main goal is relationship. God created us for relationship, with Him and with other people. The only reason God created people was so they could be involved with what He’s doing. God didn’t create people to be weak victims of circumstance, He created people in His own image and likeness. He loves our involvement and participation! God also didn’t leave the devil on Earth to rule over us, He left the devil on Earth so we could rule over him.
I think of this as us being power lines, while the power of the Holy Spirit is the electricity traveling through. Things will run smoothly when power lines are delivering electricity to every house, compared to God sending huge bolts of lighting down everywhere. The power lines are not the power, people do not have the power to heal, deliver, or change lives, but we carry the power, the power can’t get there effectively without our involvement.
“God does nothing but by prayer, and everything with it.” — John Wesley
If that makes you uncomfortable, you’re not alone. God has commissioned us and empowered us to bring His Heavenly Kingdom to Earth. Today we carry the solutions to problems people are dealing with on a daily basis. Today we can witness God do exceedingly more than we could ever imagine, by His power which is at work within us. God is calling us to step out in faith, and He will not disappoint us. Jesus said that by our faith we would do even greater miracles than He did.
In Acts 19 Luke writes that God did extraordinary miracles through Paul the Apostle. It doesn’t say that God did extraordinary miracles. And it doesn’t say that Paul did the extraordinary miracles. God and Paul co-labored together and thousands upon thousands of people were impacted. This can easily come off the wrong way, there were multiple times when people viewed Paul as a god himself. Paul then had to quickly bring correction and clarity that it was God working through him (Acts 14:11-15). Paul and the other apostles took up this great responsibility of carrying the Gospel and the power of God. They knew that they had the solution that people needed and they did not back down.
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NIV
God’s desire is to equip us to become the worlds greatest problem solvers. He wants to teach us, to give us wisdom and discernment, He wants us to help people and show people His love.
